Walk & Roll Alberta has just wrapped up, with our 2021 YCR2 team beating our 2020 achievements in number of participants, distance cycled, and amount fundraised! This annual event brings together six charities from the north and south of Alberta to raise money for children with disabilities. You Can Ride 2 joined Wood Buffalo You Can Ride 2 and the Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus Association of Northern and Southern Alberta (SBHANA, SBHASA) as well as the Cerebral Palsy Kids and Families program in Calgary and Medicine Hat Adaptive Sport and Recreation. This year’s Walk & Roll ran from June 21, 2021 until July 5, 2021.
An exciting part of Walk & Roll was the virtual scavenger hunt that was sponsored by the top sponsor, Coloplast. Participants had a chance to answer three questions and find the answers on the Coloplast website. Congratulations to Madison W from Wood Buffalo You Can Ride 2!!
This year there was also a virtual raffle with 3 prizes: a $200 dollar gift card to Costco, $500 dollars cash & a Keurig Coffee Maker and one round trip flight for two guests to any regularly scheduled and marketed WestJet destination.
The main part of Walk & Roll is participation in physical activity! This year, we also reported the time participants logged being active in the ParticipACTION Community Better Challenge, which helped fund some of our activities.
A huge part of Walk & Roll is our friendly North versus South competition, with participants trying to accumulate the most kilometers. This year saw Southern Alberta taking the win (again) with 12,230 km and Northern Alberta finishing with 8,521 km.
As part of Walk & Roll, we have prizes and challenges specifically for our You Can Ride 2 Families. This year we want to congratulate our top three teams: team ZiHeng, the Benner Family and the Robertsons. Our top three 13 and under are Brett R, Alexa H, and Sasha H. The top two over 13 are ZiHeng C-F (who also won the top overall prize for kilometers ridden), and Cole H. Our Social Media award goes to Maverick R.
At this point the final numbers are not in for the fundraising aspect of Walk & Roll, but from early reports, we know we surpassed last year’s total of $700. Thank-you to everyone who helped make Walk & Roll a success!!
